Getting a Remote Internship at a Global Org: Complete Guide
The perception that UN and World Bank internships require connections or elite credentials is outdated. These organizations have formalized, transparent application processes — and remote positions have expanded access significantly. What they require is preparation, not privilege.
The application systems you need to know
UN internships are posted on INSPIRA (careers.un.org). World Bank internships use their own careers portal. UNDP uses the UN's system. You must create profiles on these platforms — third-party job sites won't have the complete listings, and you can't apply through them anyway.
Create your INSPIRA profile before you start applying. It takes 30-60 minutes to complete properly, and an incomplete profile disqualifies you automatically. Upload all required documents at profile creation, not at application time.
What remote positions actually look like
Remote UN and World Bank internships are typically 3-6 months, unpaid or with a stipend, and attached to a specific department team. You'll be assigned a supervisor and expected to produce a real deliverable — a research brief, a data analysis, a communications campaign — by the end of your term. These are working positions, not shadowing arrangements.
Eligibility: what actually disqualifies applicants
UN internships require enrollment in a graduate program or completion of a bachelor's degree within the past year. The "within the past year" clause is often missed — recent graduates are eligible. There are no minimum GPA requirements stated in the criteria. Nationality of the hiring manager's country of origin can create informal biases, but formal UN policy prohibits discrimination on this basis and postings are globally open.
Your application package
The UN application asks for a cover letter, a CV formatted to UN standards (their system has specific field requirements), and sometimes a writing sample. The cover letter is the critical differentiator. It should directly address the team's mandate — not the UN's general mission — and explain what specific contribution you will make to their current work. Research the specific department's recent reports and publications before you write a word.
Timeline and expectations
Expect 6-12 weeks between application and decision for UN positions. World Bank moves slightly faster. Many positions are posted 3-4 months before the intended start date. If you're targeting a summer internship, you should be applying in January-February. If you miss the cycle, note the posting and set a reminder to re-apply the following year — most positions are recurring.
