Scholarships for Afghan Students
Which of the best-known scholarships accept citizens of Afghanistan, and the scholarships open now that mention Afghanistan or accept any nationality. Always confirm eligibility on each official page before you apply.
Can Afghan students apply?
Afghan citizens can apply for 7 of the 15 major programmes we checked: Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, Gates Cambridge Scholarship, Knight-Hennessy Scholars, Schwarzman Scholars, Clarendon Scholarships (Oxford), Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship, NL Scholarship (Holland Scholarship).
- Chevening Scholarships (United Kingdom): check first. Chevening lists Afghanistan in its country selector but has no Afghanistan country page, so confirm with Chevening before you apply. Next deadline: 6 October 2026, 11:00 UTC.
- Fulbright Foreign Student Program (United States): check first. Afghanistan is listed on the Foreign Fulbright website; confirm there that a competition is open for Afghan applicants. Next deadline: Set by each country’s Fulbright office.
- Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (Europe): can apply. Open to students from all over the world. Next deadline: Most programmes: between October and January.
- Stipendium Hungaricum (Hungary): not eligible. Not on the programme’s list of Sending Partners.
- Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships (United Kingdom): not eligible. Not on the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission’s list of eligible countries.
- Australia Awards Scholarships (Australia): not eligible. Not on DFAT’s list of participating countries.
- Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (Sweden): not eligible. Not one of the 34 eligible countries.
- Gates Cambridge Scholarship (United Kingdom): can apply. Open to citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom. Next deadline: 8 December 2026 or 6 January 2027, depending on your course (14 October 2026 for US citizens resident in the US).
- Knight-Hennessy Scholars (United States): can apply. Open to citizens and residents of all countries. Next deadline: 6 October 2026, 1:00 pm Pacific Time.
- Rhodes Scholarship (United Kingdom): not eligible. No Rhodes constituency covers Afghanistan, and the Global Rhodes Scholarships for other countries are suspended.
- Schwarzman Scholars (China): can apply. Open to applicants from any country; non-Chinese applicants apply in the U.S. and global round. Next deadline: Applications for the class of 2028–29 open April–September 2027 for U.S. and global applicants.
- Clarendon Scholarships (Oxford) (United Kingdom): can apply. No restrictions on nationality. Next deadline: Your Oxford course’s December or January application deadline.
- Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships (New Zealand): not eligible. Not on the list of eligible Pacific and Asian countries.
- Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship (Partner universities worldwide): can apply. On the World Bank’s list of eligible countries for 2027. Next deadline: Window 1: 18 January – 26 February 2027; Window 2: 29 March – 21 May 2027.
- NL Scholarship (Holland Scholarship) (Netherlands): can apply. Open to nationalities from outside the European Economic Area; it gives €5,000, not full tuition. Next deadline: Set by each university; the 2027–28 call has not been published yet.
